When you have money to invest, you will have two options. You can invest in long term as well as short term. However, choosing long term investment option seems to be the best one for most investors. Since short term investments normally have low returns, people with serious attitude should look at the long term opportunities to invest their money.
Long term investments have some disadvantages as well. One of the major problems with long term investments is that your money stays blocked for long time. As soon as you invest your money in a long term opportunity, it remains blocked until the investment reaches its maturity period.

Long term investment will also bring huge loss if the things go wrong. With short term investments, you can easily stop loss whereas in long term investments, you never have the opportunity. This can be a big distraction for most investors. However, the long term investments bring huge returns if you analyze everything correctly before investing the money.

You will have to start by selecting the right avenue for long term investments. You have stocks, foreign exchange, real estate, bonds, foreclosure, tax lien certificates, metals and securities. You can pick any of these different avenues. Just make sure that you have looked at pros and cons of each of these avenues of long term investment before actually making any investment.

When you do not understand something, then forget about investing in that thing. For instance, if you do not know anything about foreign exchange and forex market, then you should never invest in forex. However, you can always learn something if you want to invest money. Therefore, if you want to pick an avenue, make sure that you are eager to learn about that avenue of long term investments.
